Harvey Milk Day

I remember when I first learned about Harvey Milk.  I was born in 1977, entered school in 1981, graduated high school in 1995, graduated college in 1999, and learned about Harvey Milk in 2008 when the biopic starring Sean Penn came out.

Why wasn't this key spokesperson and politician at least mentioned in history classes when I grew up?  Could it be that in Texas, gay people weren't to be talked about or acknowledged in public?  That Harvey Milk was just a San Francisco thing and we don't do that in Texas?

Well, as we celebrate Harvey Milk's birthday today, I beg you to consider living his message out and changing things everywhere for all people.  Human rights need to begin by teaching students about all people in schools.  The key figures in history who are LGBT need to be introduced to our students, especially so LGBT students have someone with whom to identify but also so everyone recognizes that we are and always have been here.
