Dissent Within
An acquaintance of mine has been on a rant recently because he is trans*, post transition, and doesn't understand what he calls "genderqueer" people. Now, I identify as genderqueer. I don't know if he realizes that or not. One of his most recent rants was about how people are either male or female and there is no in between. He was referring to a specific person he knows who looks female, dresses female, uses a female name, and responds to female pronouns. This person supposedly "tried T and didn't like it." So, I'm sure my acquaintance was confused and taken aback because this person isn't the same kind of trans* he is, but does that mean this other person is not trans*? Trans* is an identity. It's about what we think and feel inside. It's also a political statement about breaking past the male-female binary. I'm afraid my acquaintance's attitude is part of the problem I see with cisgender transphobic people - the reinforcement of the binary. I want to see an explosion of gender types and an opening of the world to more than two genders. My Intersex friends would like to see not just more than two genders but more than two sexes. Let's all work together.
